Product DescriptionIMPORTANT NOTE: ONE DEAD JUDGE has been extensively revised as a Kindle book of the same title. This original hardcover version is not the same as the Kindle version.A lighthearted mystery set in the Maryland beach resort of Ocean City, ONE DEAD JUDGE features Dallas Henry, a lawyerturnedmotel operator, called upon to investigate the death of a retired, curmudgeon judge.Reluctant to leave hisbeach chair, and dodging hisformer legal brethren whove invaded the beach for their annualconvention, Dallas finds himself caught between a corrupt landdeveloper and a TVadvertising lawyer.Kirkus Reviews praises: Amusing fare, with the best laughs coming at the expense of the legal profession. Entertaining, Library Journal.Walker & Co., publishers. From Publishers WeeklyOccasional lawyer, chronic beach bum and owner of a seedy motel on the Maryland shore, Dallas Henry makes the pursuit of leisure a fulltime occupation in this lively sequel to Beach Money. Out of kindness, he visits cranky retired Judge Crenshaw, who swears his life is in danger and by way of explanation only offers Henry a mysterious package to open if he is killed. The judge is done in by a hitandrun at about the same time as Henrys car is (unverifiably) stolen and a sea of lawyers descends on the town for a convention. The judge had been making waves lately, worried about a soontobeparoled killer, concerned about a former partner who had come up against a ruthless developer and waging war on trial lawyer named Mack Trial. But even with all those enemies, Henry is the cops best bet for the murderer; hes set free only after lawyer Susan, the latest of his many loves, posts bail. After the package vanishes, Henry steps up his investigation, trying to hold on to Susan while avoiding the comehither demands of former lover Vicky, also a lawyer. A raunchy, warmhearted read only slightly spoiled by an excess of attorneys, practicing or not.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.From Library JournalMuch of the humor in this work arises from protagonist Dallas Henry, an aging, irresponsible jock who lives in his own Ocean City, Maryland motel. Responding to a pranklike call from Judge Crenshaw, Dallas finds himself shot at, but the next day police find Crenshaw dead and briefly blame Dallas. With the aid of the motels day manager, a semiretired female lawyer, Dallas ties the judge to an unethical land developer, a shady televangelist, and a paroled crazy man. The second in a series, this has an entertaining plot told in an offhand manner.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.From Kirkus ReviewsDallas Henry (Beach Money, 1991), now an Ocean City motel owner, returns to lawyering when crusty old Judge Crenshaw hands him a package to be opened on the judges deathand then becomes a hitandrun victim. Informed that the judge left him $50,000 in his will, Dallas becomes suspect #1until, with the help of brainy, gorgeous Susan, Dallas unearths a few more suspects: Mack Trial, whom the judge was suing for judicial malpractice; Pete Marjani, who offered the judge five percent in his golfclub project, then reneged; Gunderson, an exlaw partner whom he took for every cent he had; and Pamela, his parttime secretary/inamorata, who fiddled the state for over $40,000 in delinquent childsupport payments. Also on hand: an escaped con, three kids on the run from abusive parents, and enough sixpacks to float the Titanic. One more will die before Dallas can get back to what he likes bestsurfing, sunning, and lusting after Susan. Amusing fare, with some of the best laughs coming at the expense of the legal profession, for fans of the mediumboiled detective story. Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP.
